A film set in rural China in the 1920s. A young girl is forced by the death of her father, to drop out of university and become the fourth concubine of a rich nobleman.

The rivalry between the wives culminates in an ultimate tragedy. A highly stylised and symbolic film. Based on the novel 'Wives and concubines' by Su Tong, the film deals with the repression of women.

In Chinese with English subtitles on video server. The dvd has automatic Korean and English subtitles. Please note that these appear almost one on top of the other and can be difficult to read at times.
