Junior CULP/CULP for Schools and Colleges
- The Language Centre developed a school-facing version of the courses it offers to all students and staff of the University (known as CULP), in 2004, called Junior CULP. Delivered into local schools in the Cambridge area, it was awarded a European Award for Languages in 2006.
- From 2008 to 2011, the programme was expanded and renamed as CULP for Schools and Colleges (CULP4SC) and run as an integral part of the Routes into Languages East of England programme, delivering language tuition, supported by University of Cambridge Language Centre developed online learning materials, to some 30 schools in 5 languages.
- A reduced programme was offered from 2011 to 2013 and priorities are now being given to a wider range of other activities within the Routes into Languages project.
- Schools can still access a range of learning resources made freely available by the Language Centre as Open Courseware.
Links into Languages
The Language Centre hosted the East of England Regional Centre for the Department for Education funded Links into Languages programme of professional development for language teachers in schools and colleges, from 2009-2011.
The Language Centre was a member of Network for Languages which consisted of nine former Links into Languages regional centres. Network for Languages was committed to excellence in language learning and teaching in all settings, sectors and phases.
Open School for Languages
Open School for Languages was a £6 million project funded by the Department for Education. It aimed to provide a web-based resource for secondary school pupils and to make available a range of online material in different languages, with content designed to engage learners and support new developments in the secondary languages curriculum. It also supported face to face learning opportunities, and provided some facility for training teachers in the best use of appropriate methods and materials. The University of Cambridge Language Centre was one of the key players in the content development for this project.
