CULP: Languages at the Biomedical Campus

Please, be aware that these courses are not open to the General Public.

As the year progresses and if there is enough interest, we may be able to offer more languages and levels.

Objectives

The primary focus of the course is to develop listening (aural) and speaking (oral) skills with some scientific content. Students will also gain a greater understanding of the societies and cultures of countries where the language is spoken.

At the Biomedical Campus.

Seminar Room at the Postdoc Centre @ Biomedical Campus.

For whom

All members of the University (please note that the courses will feature some scientific content).

Each group (12-16 students) will have 10 contact hours at lunch time, once a week from the week beginning 01 October until the 06 of December 2018.

The next level course will be offered from mid-January to end of March.

Another course will be offered from April until July.

To earn a CULP Certificate of Attendance, students will need to take all three courses, attend at least 24 out of 30 lessons and pass the relevant exams.

Absolute Beginners (Basic 1)

These courses are ab initio, for complete beginners and do not require any previous knowledge of the language.

For more information about a specific language-course, please consult the relevant syllabus below (Coming soon).

The first 10 hrs module will correspond to the first 5 lessons on the syllabus. While the pace of the course will depend on the dynamics of the specific group, the syllabus will give you an insight into the course content and methodology and resources used.

Advanced Beginners (Basic 2)

These courses are for those with some formal training in the language and/or informal exposure to the language (friends, family, travel).

The level required to join the course is A2 (CEFR).

Enrolment

Enrolment will start online at 12 noon on 11 September 2018.

Online enrolment is via the Language Centre Enrolment page and places are offered on first come – first served basis.

Fees

Fee for 1 course (10 lessons):

    • Students: £100
    • Postdocs, Staff: £110

This is inclusive of all teaching/learning resources, examination and certificate.

The courses feature formative in-class and homework-based assessment.

At the end of 30 teaching hours (3 courses) there will be a formal examination: listening/reading comprehension, writing and oral presentation.

Upon successful completion you will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.

Examination is not mandatory.

Fee for 1 course (10 lessons):

This is inclusive of all teaching/learning resources, examination and certificate.
