Rupert Brown

Rupert is a Senior Language Teaching Officer in the Academic Development for International Students section of the Language Centre. In addition to his teaching duties he is responsible for developing the In-Sessional Support Programme and for creating supporting online material for the international postgraduate community in the University. His main aim is to assist international students in developing their language and academic skills so that they can maximise their potential in their studies.

Before joining the Language Centre he worked for many years teaching and training professionals and academics in language and communication skills. He worked with diplomats, politicians and managers and acted as a language consultant for a variety of companies. Rupert also spent many years training teachers and was a regional language teaching consultant when he lived and worked in Italy. He is a qualified mentor and his skills in this area inform much of his approach to teaching and training.

At present his main work interests include scientific writing, editing skills and techniques in exploiting published materials for language improvement.

In addition to his responsibilities Rupert also works with native speaker undergraduate students and specialises in the formation and development of their academic and study skills. He has close ties in this regard with three Cambridge colleges.

Rupert has a wide range of interests including cricket, Sherlock Holmes, bio anthropology, the history of film and comedy, and he is a fully qualified field archaeologist. At present he is writing a book on the history of Cambridge postcards.
