Emma Furuta

Profile

Emma leads our support for independent language learning, with a focus on learning advice, resources and learner-driven groups.  Her team develops the John Trim Centre (JTC), a growing multimedia resource base for university students and staff, spanning 170 languages for a wide range of needs.  With this aim of widening access to as many languages, learning opportunities and resources as possible, the team provides first-level departmental advice on the full range of Language Centre opportunities, along with as many university, city and overseas language learning activities or resources as they can.

In developing the learning advice here, Emma is interested in how an understanding of the language learning process and individual differences helps learners to drive forward their learning and self-efficacy.  They can tailor the process to their personal needs and motivations, and sustain it over the long term so long as they understand three things: how they work as individuals, their true purposes and how to develop personal language learning strategies accordingly.  This can be at the micro level of aspiring to be better at German prepositions, or the macro level of having the ambition to go and live in Africa to do fieldwork.  Learning strategy development can enable learners to make the most of resources, face-to-face learning and other people; interaction with a wider range of these extends the timeframe of their learning.  All of this hopefully helps them to enjoy it for life, which is the ultimate aim!

Emma’s background is in education and she is a lifelong student of modern languages, with French being her first love.
