An introduction to modern Japanese: book 1 : grammar lessons
Richard Bowring and Haruko Uryu Laurie (1992)
This book is structured as an intensive one-year introductory course taking the learner through from the most basic speech-acts to upper intermediate level reading and writing.
Designed for classroom teaching by a native speaker, and students should work through the Introduction and learn hiragana before embarking on the course proper.
The main emphasis is on grammar in use within particular social contexts. Book 2 provides exercises to accompany the 52 lessons in Book 1.
