This is Akira Kurosawa’s final film, based on the life of Japanese academic and author Hyakken Uchida (1889-1971).
Using Uchida’s posthumously published essays Kurosawa provides valuable insights into Japanese life and culture and depicts the realities of life in Tokyo during World War 2.
