Hôtel du Nord (1938)
Carné, Michel
Poetic realist drama.
The Hôtel du Nord is a small, popular hotel-cum-café by the Canal Saint-Martin where locals go to share wine and anecdotes. In the midst of celebrating a child's first communion the jovial gathering is thrown into disarray with the arrival of Renée and Pierre, a couple seeking a room for the night. The sound of a pimp and his girlfriend arguing in the next room doesn't disturb Renée and Pierre as they prepare to take their own lives.
In French without subtitles.
