ADTIS: Assessments and Assessment Procedures

Visiting Students

Student Visitors

The following English language requirements are for prospective visiting students who are registered for a degree at another institution and will be attending Cambridge for a short period of study, supervised research or a placement as part of their course.

  • All applicants applying to Cambridge as visiting students need to meet the University‚Äôs standard English language requirements. This requirement is satisfied by proof of an acceptable English language test taken within the last two years.
  • Whether or not students require a language test depends on a number of conditions, please see here for further information. Please note that only certain tests are accepted as proof of the language condition and the certificates must prove that the test has been taken within the last two years. Information on the accepted tests is held here.

Nb. If visiting students apply through the Board of Graduate Studies, they will automatically be set the normal University of Cambridge language condition as a condition of entry (see above for details).

Referral to the Language Centre

If a student has an acceptable English language test obtained within the last two years but does not meet the standard English language requirements for the University, the Language Centre is able to assess those individuals who meet at least a 6.0 in IELTS (with at least a 6.0 in each category) or TOEFL iBT score of 80 (with at least 20 in each element).

Departments should refer these students to the Language Centre along with the evidence of their English language test. It is not possible for a student to directly request this assessment.

There is a charge for the assessment which the applicant must pay in advance, although Departments can pay this fee if they wish to. On completion of the assessment, the Language Centre will confirm whether the student meets the minimum requirements.

The Department to which they are applying will notify the applicant of the outcome.
