Independent Learning in the John Trim Centre

John Trim Centre The John Trim Centre (JTC) houses resources in over 150 languages from beginner to advanced level, and staff are available to help and guide users in their choice of materials. The JTC also provides 24 multimedia workstations (18 PCs and 6 Macs), seven VHS/DVD viewing stations, and eight listening stations all of which can be used individually or in pairs for independent learning.

Direct satellite broadcasts are currently available in many languages and can be watched on the workstations. The multimedia workstations currently support the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, English, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, India/South Asia languages, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Urdu. New material is added regularly. Recordings of satellite TV are made every week night (six hours per channel) normally starting with the news. These can be accessed from a folder called 'Off-air recordings' on all multimedia workstations.

The computer assisted language learning programs available on the multimedia workstations are either installed on the Multimedia server or available on CD. There is a large collection of films in foreign languages, many of them with subtitles. Users can consult the many language learning courses available in various media formats, as well as reference books, and directories and information about language courses, international summer schools, summer jobs abroad, and language bursaries and scholarships.

For any problems encountered with the workstations, ask the staff in reception for help.
