Graduate Students - Assessment procedure

The diagram below outlines the procedure for applicants who have not met their language condition and who are referred to the Language Centre for a further assessment. This assessment is carried out via e-mail and telephone. As a result of this assessment, the Language Centre will make one of four possible recommendations to the Board of Graduate Studies. The Language Centre may recommend that:

  1. The language condition is waived;
  2. The language condition is waived providing you attend the EAP Pre-Sessional course;
  3. The language condition is waived providing you take the eDiagnostic on arrival and also undertake to take any follow-up action, for example attending an In-sessional course, which is recommended by the Language Centre following the result of your eDiagnostic (see 'Preparing for assessment' for further information on the eDiagnostic);
  4. The language condition is not waived and you should retake either IELTS or TOEFL. If this is not possible before the start of term, you may need to apply to defer or resubmit your application.

Please note that recommendations 1 to 3 require the approval of your Department, Faculty and College, and if approval is not given, your language condition will not be waived and you will need to retake an IELTS or TOEFL test. If this is not possible before the start of term, you may need to apply to defer or resubmit your application.
